Leipzig is a city with a long history. Between the seventh and ninth centuries there were first Slavic settlements near the confluence of Parthe and Elster, and in 1015 Leipzig was mentioned as "urbs Libzi" for the first time in the chronicle of Bishop Thietmar von Merseburg. 150 years later Leipzig was awarded the city rights by Markgraf Otto The Rich. More than 800 years ago, the famous Thomanerchor (Thomaner Choir) from the former Augustinian Chorherrenstift has emerged and continues to inspire viewers from all over the world. The city has also written more recent history, since Leipzig's Nikolaikirche was one of the most important places for peace and the starting point for the Monday’s demonstrations. This was a major contribution to the German Reunification in Leipzig.
Apart from history, Leipzig is also an important metropolis. The Leipziger Buchmesse (books fair) attracts a large number of visitors every year. In 2009, according to information from the exhibition management, around 147,000 visitors were attracted! Furthermore, not only young people at Leipzig appreciate a lively nightlife with a diverse pub and club landscape. And who has never heard of the Wave-Gothic meeting, which every year attracts more than 30,000 representatives of the alternatives and the gothic scene to Leipzig and attracts growing media interest?
During your visit to Leipzig you will find plenty to explore. Although the city was heavily hit during the Second World War, which led to the destruction of some 60 per cent of the building fabric, many traces of past times can be found in Leipzig. Important buildings from different historical periods can be seen in Leipzig, but above all the bourgeois baroque and the historicism of the Gründerzeit (period of promoterism) left their traces in the city. The latter can be seen particularly well at the Waldstraßenviertel, where there are many monument-protected buildings. In the style of the bourgeois baroque built structures are for example the old stock exchange and various Kaufmannshäuser (merchant houses) like the Fregelhaus, the Romanushaus and the Königshaus. A very special sight is the Old Town Hall, one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Germany.
Some buildings are dedicated to famous personalities who once lived in Leipzig. To the east of the city center you will find, for example, the Mendelssohn House, where Felix Mendelssohn lived until his death. Friedrich Schiller spent several months in the town, in a farmhouse in the district of Gohlis. He worked there, among others, on his "Ode to Joy". The Schillerhaus in Leipzig is the oldest preserved farmhouse in the city today and is now used as a memorial.
If you have a weakness for the fine arts, Leipzig holds some highlights for you. A highlight for music lovers is, for example, the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, one of the most renowned orchestras in Germany and abroad. The venues of Gewandhausorchester are the Gewandhaus, the Leipzig Opera and the Thomaskirche. This is where the famous Thomaner Choir performs three times a week. As an art lover, on the other hand, you will find yourself at the Galeriezentrum in the Alte Baumwollspinnerei, where contemporary works by various artists will be presented.
Leipzig and its beautiful surroundings also offer plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind. About a third of the city's surface consists of various green areas and forests, so you can breathe deeply. The best place for this is the Auenwald, the town forest of Leipzig. It runs like a green belt in the middle of the city, so a nice recreation area is never far away, no matter where you are in Leipzig. You will find trails for walking, running, cycling or horseback riding as well as playgrounds, a fitness trail and a forest trail. The most popular parks in Leipzig are the Rosental and the Clara Zetkin Park. In addition to the new Grünau area, the Kulkwitzer See, one of the clearest and cleanest lakes in Central Germany, is inviting for all kinds of leisure activities. The surrounding area of the lake is ideal for biking and the lake itself can be used for swimming and diving. There is also a boat rental and a modern water ski or wake boarding facility.
Or how about a small bet? Accompanied by a charming escort lady, you can visit the galloping track in the Scheibenholz, the oldest sports center in Leipzig. During the racing season this is an exciting experience! Great entertainment is also guaranteed by the BELANTIS amusement park, where you can embark on a journey through history. Whether in the valley of the Pharaohs, on the beach of the gods or on the island of pirates - in the BELANTIS amusement park, exciting rides and interesting attractions wait for you.
The gastronomy of Leipzig has more for you in petto than Leipziger Allerlei (mixture of steamed/cooked vegetables). You can enjoy a variety of regional specialties as well as international food, because the gastronomy landscape in Leipzig is particularly extensive. Why not go to the Barfüßergässchen in the oldest part of Leipzig to do "Drallewatsch" accompanied by an attractive escort lady? "Drallewatsch" is Saxon and stands for going from pub to pub. In the Barfüßergässchen not only the houses are very close together, the density of restaurants and bars is very high. Or is "Auerbachs Keller" a term for you? Johann Wolfgang von Goethe made him play a role in his "Faust", making the place world-famous.
