The city of Bonn in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is best known for its function as a German federal capital and as the seat of the German federal government. From the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn bore the title of the capital until it was replaced by Berlin in this function after the German reunification. In 1999, the government moved to Berlin. Although the Federal President and Federal Chancellor still have their second seat in Bonn and some ministries still use the city as their first place of residence, the loss of the capital status and the move of the government to Berlin meant a major change for Bonn. The city is still subject to structural change.
Bonn is an urban municipality with about 318,000 inhabitants. It lies on both banks of the Rhine and is one of the oldest cities in Germany. In 1989 it was already celebrating its 2000th birthday! Bonn goes back to Germanic and Roman settlements, which were in place of today's Bonn (formerly Bonna). Bonn has since undergone a changeful history, e.g. Bonn was once the residence of the Cologne electors and was also known as the birthplace of the famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
As a city with a long history, Bonn has a lot to offer to visitors. One of the landmarks of the city is, for example, the Old Town Hall, which was built from 1737 onwards in the style of Rococo. Very close to the Old Town Hall is the Electoral Palace, which once served as the residence of the Cologne electors. The Poppelsdorferallee, surrounded by the chestnut trees, will take you as well as your escort lady to the Poppelsdorfer Schloss, a castle built for the electors. Another landmark of the city of Bonn is the Bonn Cathedral, built in the 11th century. Another interesting church, as well as one of the oldest buildings in the city of Bonn, is the double church building in Schwarzrheindorf. The Alte Friedhof (Old Cemetery), one of the most famous cemeteries in Germany, has a special charm. Here you can find some tombs of celebrities, such as Beethoven's mother. Clara and Robert Schumann are also honored there with a monument.
Another attraction is the "Old Customs", which is a bastion of the old fortress ring. You should also look at the “Sterntor” (stargate). It did not always have its present form but was dismantled around 1900 due to tramway construction and rebuilt elsewhere and in a different form.
Of course, some buildings of Bonn's time also bear witness as a government seat and federal capital. For example, the "Lange Eugen", a high-rise building built in the 1960s, which is now under monument protection. It once housed numerous deputies' offices and is now used by various UN organizations. The Bundeshaus is also a prominent building in which former plenary sessions of the Bundestag and the Bundesrat took place. Another remarkable building of the postmodern era, which is not related to Bonn's former function as a federal capital, is the Post Tower, which houses the main administration of Deutsche Post. It is close to "Langen Eugen" and is the highest office building in all of North-Rhine Westphalia.
The city of Bonn has a distinctive cultural landscape. In particularly large numbers, important museums are represented in Bonn such as, for example, the art and exhibition hall of the Federal Republic of Germany ("Bundeskunsthalle") and the “Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland”. They are among the ten most visited museums in Germany, attracting more than 500,000 visitors from Germany and abroad each year, although this figure can be far exceeded in certain special exhibitions. Both houses were created in the same way as the likewise renowned Kunstmuseum Bonn in the early 1990s. They are part of the Bonn museum mile, which includes houses such as the German Museum in the Science Center, the ifa Gallery and the famous Museum King. Other museums in Bonn include the Rheinische Landesmuseum, the Frauenmuseum, the Goldfuß Museum and the Horst Stoecke Museum.
If you want to visit a musical event with your escort lady, there is plenty of opportunity in Bonn. The Beethoven-Orchestra Bonn is regularly heard in the Beethoven-Halle and the Beethoven Festival takes place every autumn. Also worth a visit is the open-air festival Rheinkultur, where all modern music directions are represented.
The Bonn nightlife offers a manageable number of opportunities, but is still very much alive. There are many pubs and trendy clubs in the Old Town of Bonn, which are mainly visited by a student audience. But it is not just the students who shape Bonn's nightlife but also politicians. This clientele means that there are also various establishments of higher price classes in Bonn. They are found throughout the city, but mainly on the banks of the Rhine.
